Treatment for Adult ADHD

Therapy for Adult ADHD gives you tools for coping and information for self-understanding

One of the goals of ADHD therapy for women is to develop compassion for yourself and your struggles and to disrupt the negative self-talk that may be holding you back from striving for more in life.

We will work together to develop a set of personalized coping skills you can use to overcome immediate challenges in day-to-day life. Sometimes, with therapy for ADHD, clients find it helpful to venture into solution-focused conversations to help with organization, personal care, time management, or managing a family.

Our conversations can help you look back on your past through the lens of ADHD, leading to deeper self-understanding and compassion for your past and present self. We can work together on learning to communicate about ADHD to those around us and advocate for accommodations. Once your support network understands ADHD, you’ll find more love, acceptance, and understanding for your daily struggles.

You may be wondering if ADHD treatment for adults is right for you…

My friend with ADHD sees a coach. Should I find an ADHD coach or a therapist?

ADHD coaching is typically focused on creating solutions and providing accountability. Like coaching, adult therapy for ADHD not only offers you an opportunity to solve problems and build valuable life skills, but it also addresses other possible aspects of living with ADHD symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues.

Working with an ADHD therapist allows you to integrate childhood experiences and gain a deeper understanding—and healing—of the self that goes beyond gaining practical coping skills.

What if I’m not sure I have adult ADHD or need treatment for myself?

An official diagnosis is not required for ADHD-informed therapy. There are many reasons you may be struggling with executive functioning skills or lack of focus, such as depression or other life stressors.

However, the same techniques I use can be helpful for anyone experiencing these symptoms whether or not it’s ADHD.

As an LMFT, I am able to diagnose ADHD based on clinical interviews. This therapeutic diagnosis can help inform our treatment and increase your self-understanding. If you think you may benefit from a full psychoeducational assessment, we can go through the process together to find you a qualified psychologist. With a therapeutic diagnosis, I can help refer you to a psychiatrist who can do an evaluation for medication management of ADHD. If you don’t know where to start, we can make a game plan together.

I’m taking medication for my adult ADHD—isn’t that enough?

Medication can be a great treatment for symptoms of Adult ADHD. However, many underlying issues related to ADHD are not fully addressed by pharmaceutical interventions, such as self-esteem issues, relationship problems, or impaired executive functioning. Therapy, in contrast—especially in conjunction with medication—facilitates comprehensive long-term healing as well as short-term relief. The gold standard for adult ADHD treatment is a combination of medication and therapy.

ADHD doesn’t have to be a barrier to finding happiness
